League Details

How much does it cost?

Free, aside from purchasing the game itself. Formula P has some expenses, but all the work done for the league is on a volunteer basis.

How to race?

Formula P uses Assetto Corsa Ultimate Edition on steam. The car for Season Nine is the Formula Hybrid V12-R. According to RSS, it is “catered to racing league specifications for close racing combat.” We are currently a fixed setup league.

When do you race?

We are a U.S.-based server, racing Tuesday nights. Races start at 9:05pm EDT. Our schedule generally follows the F1 calendar with some custom races mixed in. Session starts with a 18 minute open qualifying, followed by a 50% distance race with some modifications to tire life.

How long is the season?

Our primary seasons are typically 10 races long, and we host multiple seasons annually. Because people have real lives, only your top 9 finishes are recorded. This means we drop either your worst finish or a missed race in tabulating the final individual driver results.

What is the competition?

We look for parity above all. New drivers are welcome, and are given some advantages to stay in the mix. Over time, those advantages melt away as the skill level rises. We have a cooperative approach to teams. New drivers start as a "backmarker" for their first season. After a few races, a new driver will join a "midfielder" and "contender" to compete in the WCC.

What do I need to race?

Our mod package is fairly limited. Content Manager is a must. We also use the custom shaders patch, Sol, Real Penalty, and Helicorsa. Other mods you can use if they don’t impact competition. We have a single download that covers then essentials for you. Details can be found on our discord after you join.

League Structure

Can I start in the middle of a season?

Yes! In fact, it is encouraged. Starting as soon as possible allows time for trouble shooting and getting comfortable with the car. It' also helps us evaluate your skill before the start of the next season and place you in the appropriate division with a challenging restrictor.

What is a restrictor?

The restrictor limits the performance of our better drivers to help promote parity in the league. Throughout the season the Commissioner may adjust the restrictor amount of individual drivers. Typically, the more experienced drivers have higher restrictors. If you are looking for more of a challenge, you can request a higher restrictor at anytime. Our goal is to have tight, wheel to wheel racing regardless of skill level.

How do the divisions work?

There are three divisions in Formula P (“Contenders,” “Midfielders,” and “Backmarkers.”) Racers are placed in a division based on in-season performance. New racers typically start in the “Backmarker” Division.

How are points awarded?

Formula P has two points systems. An individual driver points system which models the Formula 1 points system based on your overall placement in a race. We also have a team points system that awards points based on where you finished compared to rivals in your division. Contenders race contenders, Backmarkers race Backmarkers, etc. Team points are also awarded for best qualifying time and fastest lap by division.

Formula P Racing Oddities

Can I practice?

A practice server with the selected track will be made available at least a day before the race (often earlier).

How do I join a team?

Your first race will be as a “free agent.” During that race we will access your skill and allow you to get comfortable with the car without affecting the established teams. In the following weeks, you’ll be added at an existing team to finish out the season.

Do you have safety cars?

Assetto Corsa doesn’t support a reliable safety car, but we have developed a process to declare a safety car when a vehicle is immobilized. Because of this workaround, we require all drivers to be on connected comms.

What happens if a driver was reckless and crashed into me?

Racing incidents happen. If you feel it necessary, we have a process to penalize gross misconduct, over aggressive drivers, or negligence during the race. If you are crashed out of a race, you are able to use a mulligan to re-enter.

What is a Mulligan?

It is a waiver that allows a driver who has crashed out of a race to immediately return. Every season, each driver has 1 mulligan a season, so use it wisely. If a driver crashes out of a race has already expended or chooses not to use a mulligan, you enter a secondary race for drivers who have also crashed out so your night is not over.

Can I design a unique livery?

We love liveries. Each season team captains are in charge of designing a unique livery. If you are interested in helping out, let us know!
